Algeria: Ahmed Ouyahia gets 7 years in prison
Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, the former Algerian prime minister, was finally sentenced to seven years in prison. He was sentenced by a Sidi M’Hamed court in the Algerian capital. This decision is motivated by his involvement in a corruption case in the tourism sector.
Former Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia was the last to serve during the era of Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Since June 2020, he has been in prison, following a conviction in other corruption cases. This resulted in 15 years in prison and the seizure of his property. With this new conviction his ordeal is not about to fade from so soon.

Since the revolution, minister Ahmed Ouyahia has been charged with several counts. Among other things, he is accused of laundering money. He is also accused of being involved in corruption cases in the car assembly sector.
In addition, he is suspected of granting privileges to businessmen. These are all incriminations against the close friend of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Then the prosecutor of the Republic, had requested a sentence of 12 years in prison firm for him, last December 26.
Tough sanctions
In this case of corruption linked to the hotel sector, the former Prime Minister will once again have seven years to spend behind bars. He was fined one million Algerian dinars.
His co-accused investor Saifeddine Ben Fassih was sentenced to four years in prison. Two former ministers, Tourism and Public Works, were sentenced to three years in prison.
The Algerian justice system therefore seems more than deciding to end impunity. Many high-ranking people must now expect to be held accountable.
